As the debate for best taco in Arizona rages on, a dark hose contender south of the stadium is gaining on the leaders, threatening to take the title from the best Mexican food across the state.

Aimlessly driving down Jefferson during a rather short lunch hour, my work proximity associate, or friend, as I normally call him, proposed a wild suggestion.

I know of a taco shop south of the stadium, BEST tacos I’ve ever had in my life.

I’m pretty serious about my tacos, so I don’t throw the b-word out there too often. However, I’m always game for a new taco venture. We head down 7th street, down from downtown, so…undertown? We pull into a lot, empty with the exception of a brick building with a Western-style cowboy theme under their front oning.

The options on the menu are sparing, a good sign for flavor and for a conflicted human being such as myself. My mind has been made up for me. Dos tacos de carne asada y un cola mexicana favor. My Spanish game is sharper than ever.

Mexican cola in hand, I eagerly await the arrival of the hyped-up carne asada. And then, all of a sudden, the tacos occurred.

Adding pickled onions, salsas, and white cabbage, I smell the flavor emanating from some of the juiciest carne asada I’ve ever seen. First bite, ahoy.

One life-changing bite later and I’m stunned. I’m normally not a carne asada guy, rather a carnitas or chicken type of guy. My girlfriend calls me a impatient type of guy, but I’m pretty sure that’s irrelevent. Either way, that bite makes me want to be a carne asada guy for the rest of my life.

The smokey yet succulent meats hugs my taste buds. They’re now friends. I cannot chomp on these tacos any faster, as my right ring finger almost gets taken off. Clearly these tacos are so fulfilling that all my coordination is no longer present.

Who would have thought that some of the best tacos in town were hiding out behind Chase Field? My friend has earned validity in his future recommendations.

Well, I hope they like me there, because they’ll be seeing a lot of me.
