I can’t remember how many times I had been asked, “Have you ever had the butter cake at Ocean Club/Mastros?” to which I always respond with “No I haven’t, I keep forgetting to order it.”. My assumption was always a very very rich chocolate cake with an amazing butter cream frosting so thick it would get stuck in my teeth much like peanut butter does. My mind always went there because the cake has “butter” in its name and butter cream frosting is my favorite!

Well, over the summer I was at Ocean Club with my two best friends after a night out on the town. We stopped in for a drink, some incredibly large (almost lobster size) shrimp cocktails…..AND MY BUTTER CAKE! (yes, I did yell that) Let me tell you, it was nothing like I expected. First of all the cake came out looking like the shortcakes my mom used to make with a dollop of whipping cream and slices of strawberries (which was always a nice desert, but certainly not a rich one. Sorry mom!). Except this had ice cream on top of it and no sliced strawberries. To be honest when it was presented and placed on the table I thought…ehh. I took my first bite and I could have never been so wrong about something in my entire life. I swear to you my buddies and I looked at each other like we just tasted something that came straight out of Willy Wonka’s Factory. Then we politely waited for each other to have our equally proportioned bite of what one of the guys called “Gods Twinkie”!

You need to go to Ocean Club or any other Mastros restaurant in town and try this cake! I swear you’ll feel as though your having an everlasting Gobstopper, or a Scrumpdiddlyumptious Bar! You might even look around for a guy in a purple top hat!
