Mariposa restaurant is a place above the rest, literally and figuratively, as it sits high off the main road of Sedona, and offers incomparable food.
The interior’s décor reflects that of an artsy, comfortable cabin, but I chose to sit on the patio, which was packed. Once seated I realized why–Mariposa offers some of the best views of the beautiful red rocks that Sedona is known for. The lunch menu offers upscale, casual dining (no dress code needed), which made me feel comfortable even in my post-hiking attire. Evenings are more formal, and a wonderful place for date nights and receptions.
I ordered the primo ‘burger’, a vegetarian entrée that replaces the hamburger patty with a large portobello mushroom (expertly marinated and grilled), and topped by caramelized onions, manchego and a chipotle aioli ($15). Each burger at Mariposa is served with a choice of three-seed cilantro slaw or potato salad, but I opted for the Yuca fries, which incurred a slight up-charge, but it was well worth it ($8). Made from the cassava root, these fries are much lighter than standard potato fries. The cassava also gave the side dish a more dense bite, which kept me from eating two at a time.
A special side note for one of Mariposa’s oft overlooked side dishes, the triple queso truffle mac’n’cheese ($11), which packed a flavorful punch, with spiral noodles in a thick, queso sauce, and a slight undertone of truffle.
Come to Mariposa to see the views, and leave feeling full and delighted no matter what you have on the menu. After eating there, it is no surprise that Mariposa is one of the top restaurants in the area. Make the trip!
