The FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel, located at 1100 North Central Avenue, is excited to announce artist Bobo Yo’s “RE:appropriation” exhibit opening on Friday, March 1. An artist’s reception will be held at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with Downtown Phoenix’s First Friday Art Walk. The exhibit will also be featured with additional show hours during Art Detour Weekend, Friday, March 15 through Sunday, March 17, and will remain on display at the hotel through Sunday, March 31.
“The impetus for these works is a continuation of my blend of retro and pop culture,” says Bobo Yo. “This exhibit features outsider art and Japanese anime combined with the influence of today’s bubbling pop culture — with paintings hovering between graffiti and calligraphy.”
The exhibit references Bobo’s childhood heroes and contemporary anti-heroes, as well as colliding themes of youth, beauty, and fading memories. Throughout the exhibit, guests can view re-use and re-imaging of familiar figures from Bobo’s childhood such as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Batman and Robin, and Betty Boop as well characters from today like Homer Simpson, Pikachu and Stewie from Family Guy.
“Bobo’s art has been on display here previously and it was extremely well received,” says Michael Oleskow, Cultural Curator for the FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel. “Though this new exhibit is totally different from what our guests have seen of Bobo’s work in the past, we know it’s going to be another very well-received exhibit.”
